Skinning Animals for Mounting

Quality taxidermy begins with proper game care. If you have any questions regarding the
care or skinning of your trophy, please call or stop by.

Shoulder Mounts

DO NOT CUT THE THROAT! Make the cuts as shown (figure 1) down the center of the back. Shoulder mount capes should be cut off well behind the front legs (to the middle of the back is excellent), and leave skin on the legs down to the knees. DO NOT LET THE CAPE/SKIN AIR DRY! REMOVE ALL EXCESS BLOOD PRESENT ON HAIR! Place the head in a ventilated cloth (game) bag-DO NOT USE A PLASTIC BAG! DO NOT SALT THE SKIN-just freeze it or keep it as cool as possible and get it to your wildlife artist.

Life-Size and Rug Mounts

For Life-size (see figure 2), make your first cut beginning approximately 12" from the tip of the chin, down the length of the body to the end of the tail (for rug mounts, this first cut begins approximately 4" from the tip of the chin, down the length of the body to the end of the tail). The second cut begins at the inside of the feet, down the inside of the legs, meeting the 1st cut made previously down the body length (do this for all 4 legs). Continue skinning the animal, leaving the head and feet attached and in the skin. The final care of the cape/skin should be the same as the precautions outlined in the above shoulder mount.

Small Mammals and Birds

DO NOT GUT! Freeze your trophy whole in a plastic bag, and get it to your wildlife artist as soon as possible.
